Our History

The Columbus Empowerment Corporation (CEC), formerly called Columbus Compact Corporation, is a non-profit organization that was established in 1995. It is a community development corporation (CDC) and operates as a 501(c)3 organization. Columbus Empowerment credits its success to its diverse board of directors, led by its second CEO, and strong partnerships with other small business statewide agencies.

The Heritage Square Shopping Center, located on the corner of Main Street and Elm Avenue, featuring Save-A-Lot, Simply Fashions, and Advance Auto, was one of our most iconic projects to date. While some may view the recent closure of the Save-A-Lot grocery store as a disappointment, we choose to see it differently. The store served the community faithfully for over a decade, providing much-needed access to fresh and affordable groceries. Its opening marked a significant milestone, as it was the first new grocery store to grace the area in 26 long years. We take pride in the lasting impact it had on the neighborhood and the countless lives it touched during its operation.
